CFPB still under fire for employee issues

by | Jun 27, 2016 | employee rights, Firm News |

Some Pennsylvania residents may be aware that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been under scrutiny by the Government Accountability Office due to its treatment of employees and the poor workplace environment. Although the CFPB has made strides in reducing problems related to lack of fair treatment, a survey of employees found that many believe the agency is still run by managers who are both vengeful and discriminatory.

The GAO survey found that more than a quarter of respondents had negative views on the way that the bureau handled reports of problems, treatment of employees and the issue of reprisal. In some areas of the organization, dissatisfaction with the handling of these matters was higher than 35 percent.

In particular, the CFPB has been accused of age, gender and race based discrimination. Changes in management training and the way that worker performance ratings are determined have been made, but these efforts have not made a sufficient difference to many who work for the bureau. Additionally, the GAO states that the CFPB does not report comprehensively on its goals or the progress being made by its initiatives, so it is difficult to tell what if anything ti is doing is helping.

Employee rights include protections against discrimination as well as the ability to work in a safe environment. These rights prevent employers from discriminating against employees or job applicants on the basis of their race, gender or religious beliefs. Employment law attorneys will also remind their clients that federal and state laws also forbid harassing or terminating a worker who has complained about this type of treatment.
